Delve into the meticulous art of Nerikomi ceramics. This workshop, set within the inviting atmosphere of our studio in Long Beach, presents a unique opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in the beauty of ceramics.

Workshop Outline:

1.Introduction to Nerikomi:

Begin with an overview of Nerikomi, this Japanese technique involves stacking, slicing, and reassembling colored clay to create intricate patterns.

Sara will demonstrate 2 basic Nerikomi patterns at the beginning of the class and will help each student out one by one during the duration of the workshop.

2.Techniques:

Checkerboard Pattern: Learn to craft a visually striking checkerboard pattern by skillfully layering colored clays. This technique offers endless possibilities for creating bold and dynamic designs.

Cell Pattern: Discover the method to create a mesmerizing cell pattern, which involves a detailed process of stacking, cutting, and reassembling clay layers to achieve a unique organic look.

  1. Hands-on Creation:

    • Under Sara’s guidance, apply these techniques to create 2 to 3 personal pieces, such as small dishes, incense holders, or bowls. Individual attention will ensure that each participant can explore these techniques with confidence.

  2. Ceramic Finishing & Care:

    • Discuss the next steps in the Nerikomi process, such as bisque firing, glazing, and the final firing. Participants will receive instructions on how to care for and use their finished pieces, ensuring they can be enjoyed for years to come.

    • The pieces will be bisque fired and glazed in Sara’s studio by herself and will be available for pick-up 2-3 weeks after. Shipping is possible for an extra fee.

Included in the Workshop:

Comprehensive materials for the Nerikomi process, including colored clays and tools.

Finishing of the pieces (glazing and firing).

What to Bring:

Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing that they don't mind getting a bit of clay on.

Cancelation Policy:

Workshops are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend the workshop you may transfer it to another person. Please confirm with me first.
